Expert Fixer

Role overview

As an Expert Fixer, you’ll take charge of repairing small and medium electrical items without needing guidance from others.

From assessing and testing to repairing and signing off, you’ll bring gadgets back to life so they can be sold in our shop or donated to people in need.

You’ll also be there to support other fixers, offering advice on more complex repairs. If you enjoy figuring things out and solving problems independently, this role is perfect for you!

Main Responsibilities

  1. Repair any electrical items like from lamps, power supplies, kettles, toasters to laptops and some circuits.

  2. Support Proficient Fixers with higher grade repairs.

  3. Proficiently using our repair management system

  4. Liaise with the Fixing Factory manager and/or session leader to identify items to be repaired.

  5. On Thursdays sessions we try to explain to the public how to fix an item - in this instance a core task is to talk to one person at a time whilst repairing their item.

  6. Complete a basic DBS check, and repeat this DBS check at agreed intervals in line with legal requirements (funded by Fixing Factories).

  7. Keeping our workshop tidy and place tools back in their designated place at the end of the session or right after use.

  8. Follow all Fixing Factory procedures, including our health, safety and safeguarding procedures and attend any training provided by FF (e.g. first-aid, anti-oppression, etc.).

  9. Play an active role in keeping the Fixing Factory a supportive, inspiring and anti-oppressive place to be.

  10. Be a team player - e.g. tea making, skill sharing and washing up.
