Proficient Fixer

Role overview

As a Proficient Fixer, your main mission is to help bring small and medium electrical items back to life — with a bit of guidance from our friendly Safety Leaders and Expert Fixers.

You’ll get hands-on assessing, testing, repairing, and eventually signing off items so they can find a new home, either sold in our shop or donated to those in need. Don’t worry if you’re not an expert at everything just yet — we’re here to support you, help you grow in the role, and provide training to build your confidence and skills.

Most importantly, we want you to bring your enthusiasm and curiosity to the team, and we’ll make sure you’ve got everything you need to get stuck in.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Repair simple electrical items like lamps, power supplies, kettles, toasters etc.

  2. Proficiently using our repair management system (training provided).

  3. Liaise with the Fixing Factory manager and/or session leader to identify items to be repaired.

  4. On Thursdays sessions we try to explain to the public how to fix an item - in this instance a core task is to talk to one person at a time whilst repairing their item.

  5. We are required to DBS some roles and this one is one of them.

  6. Keeping our workshop tidy and place tools back in their designated place at the end of the session or right after use.

  7. Follow all Fixing Factory procedures, including our health, safety and safeguarding procedures and attend any training provided by FF (e.g. first-aid, anti-oppression, etc.).

  8. Play an active role in keeping the Fixing Factory a supportive, inspiring and anti-oppressive place to be.

  9. Be a team player - e.g. tea making, skill sharing and washing up.
