EDIT: 24th June 22 - Our first Fixing Factory cohort has finished the initial one week course and Is embarking on five week’s work experience - we have used up our current training budget, but plan to provide more courses in the future…

Because bringing on a new generation of young local fixers is key to a sustainable (fixable) future - training and skill sharing will be central to Fixing Factories. So we're delighted to announce applications for our very first course are now open….

- Build your own Computer and keep it for £FREE -

Please note this training has already taken place, but we’re leaving the page up for information

The course - run by our partners Mer-IT - will introduce you to the basics of laptop repair (Plus you’ll get to build your own desktop computer to take home)

When? Training 20th-24th June followed by 5 weeks of work experience

Where? Beethoven Centre, Third Avenue, Queens Park, W10 4JL

Who? You need to be between the ages of 18 and 30 and be a resident of either Camden or Brent

Qualifications or experience needed? None, just an interest in learning about fixing - the course is flexible to suit beginners and experienced fixers

Cost? Fixing Factory are covering this

Our first group of trainees will be taken through the workings of a modern computer: including hardware, software and all the tech jargon - this is an excellent first step for anyone considering a career in fixing

The course won't make you an instant expert - that takes time, dedication and experience - but it's a very good grounding and trainees will gain an understanding of the fundamentals while developing skills to diagnose and fix many of the common hardware and software problems that lead to our devices being thrown away.

Professional repair is an industry where if you can show you can do it you may well get the job over someone with formal qualifications - just like a mechanic, the right person is the one who can diagnose and get your car or bike safely on the road, and that’s not necessarily someone with any formal schooling at all - fixing tech is the same: it involves a range of skills you can build up over time and learn as you go

That's not to undersell the challenges here - being an expert fixer takes many hours of dedication, problem solving and a willingness to tackle those tough repairs head on

If you’re someone who already fixes their stuff - or likes to have a go - this might be just right for you, but don’t worry if you’ve never picked up a screwdriver: you might well surprise yourself!

The electronics we throw away - e-waste - is a huge and fast-growing problem, and fixing Factories are a brand new initiative helping fix it - by joining this course you can be a part of this exciting new enterprise

Note: we hope to offer more course in the future: for this round we are able to offer only 10 spaces: 5 for Brent residents and 5 for Camden residents
